I’m sure more than one of you will say a good “finally” when you hear this. The charging case of the new AirPods Pro is charged by induction or via a Lightning cable, but the charging cable included with the purchase is Lightning to USB-C instead of the traditional Lightning to USB-A.
It’s not just the first time this has happened on an AirPod: is the first time Apple has sold one of its accessories with a standard USB-C cable . Ideally, the case itself would also be charged via a USB-C port and not Lightning, but this is still a good step towards USB-C hegemony everywhere.
With this cable, owners of new AirPods Pro will be able to charge the earphones in their case directly on a MacBook Air or Pro without the aid of an adapter . In fact, we’ll even be able to charge them by connecting them to an iPad Pro, in the same way that we can already charge an iPhone using that tablet.
The iPhone 11 Pro also comes with a Lightning to USB-C cable as standard in its case, while the iPhone 11 continues with the traditional Lightning to USB-C cable. So for now we can say that the USB-C serial connections are focused on the ‘Pro’ models … but sooner or later they will be present in all the company’s products. It’s just a matter of time and this gesture with the Pro AirPods is a good example.
