Apple Neural Engine , this is the name of the chip that, according to Bloomberg, Apple is developing to improve the capabilities related to artificial intelligence (AI) in its iPhone, iPad, Mac or any other product.
Today, Apple devices already have a certain AI component such as Siri, but the arrival of a dedicated chip could be a turning point in these features and would make the company’s devices much more “intelligent”.
In addition to this, the existence of a dedicated AI chip on future iPhones would also have other advantages. As with the motion coprocessor currently included in mobile devices, a dedicated AI chip would free the processor from having to do these processes , so it would certainly improve battery life and enhance overall device performance.
According to the report, the chip is already being tested on some iPhone prototypes . Its functions would be limited at the moment to some basic functions such as facial recognition, recognition of different voices, improvements in the predictive keyboard. In addition, they believe that in the future the company would open up access to the chip to third party developers through an API, exactly as happened with Touch ID or Siri.
We already knew that Apple is very interested in artificial intelligence , but we had not really thought about the possibility of creating a dedicated chip for this field. Of course we will have to wait for official confirmation of its existence, which could happen next week during the WWDC17 opening speech.
Will the iPhone 8 incorporate this specialized AI chip? Will it be one of the highlights of Cupertino’s next smartphone or will it take a while before we see it in a real product?
