We compared the features of Chromecast and AirPlay

Chromecast is Google’s newest toy. It is a stick that will allow us to watch YouTube videos, watch Netflix movies or browse the web from Google Chrome. It will also be compatible with iOS, so we have decided to compare it with its direct competitor, AirPlay. So we’re going to tell you the pros and cons of each.

Yesterday was an important day in Google, and they have presented new products, which are especially related to Android . If you want to know all the news, go to Andro4All where our partners have covered the event from top to bottom so you don’t miss anything.

But iOS has also been peppered with new features. With Chromecast, the new stick for streaming on any TV will be compatible with iOS and OS X via Google Chrome , the YouTube or Netflix application.

This small device connects to the back of our TV via HDMI and is ready to broadcast the content we send you from any device Windows, Mac, iOS or Android. In addition, we will be able to get one from 35 dollars from today, although in Spain it is not yet on sale.

We now go on to to compare Chromecast with its direct competitor: the Apple AirPlay . We will review the characteristics of each protocol and explain its advantages and disadvantages, which are not few.

This new Google protocol is implemented as a multiplatform alternative, since we can send content to our stick from a mobile or tablet with iOS or Android , or any computer with Chrome installed, from any operating system.

As in the case of the computer is Chrome that commands, we can surf the Internet from the television. But the most interesting thing is that it is not a simple video signal that we send to the TV, but that Chromecast renders the web pages independently and shows them on screen , so it avoids an excessive consumption of processor in our computer.

What we don’t know is if Chromecast will also be able to be used from the Google Chrome browser on the iPad, and if, as it is an integrated browser, Chromecast will be compatible with Flash . But if you still have any doubts, our colleagues at Andro4all explain how Chromecast works on video:

The good thing about Chromecast is that it’s a fairly independent device, since it receives no streaming signal from our device very often, but rather commands, and it’s the device itself that displays the information. If we upload a video from YouTube, it will not be sent through our network to the device, but Chromecast itself will play it by accessing the Internet to download it from YouTube itself .

With our device we will limit ourselves to remotely control the reproduction. Thanks to the fact that the Chromecast is independent, we will be able to add videos to the playback queue and continue using our device while all this happens in the background without affecting our battery or performance. We know that this is possible in Android, but we are not so sure that multitasking is possible in iOS.

Another of the most amazing things about Chromecast that AirPlay can’t do is that we can control playback from other devices , so if someone leaves home and we were watching a movie on Netflix from a friend’s device, the application detects that content is being played by Chromecast and gives us the option to take control.

However, what may seem like an advantage in terms of independence becomes an advantage in terms of versatility, as we depend on developers to integrate the Chromecast API into their applications to make them compatible with this stick . Although from the looks of it, it is sure to become very popular and the most important applications will take full advantage of it . Chromecast integrated into applications like VLC can be a very nice feature.

As you guessed right, applications need to be updated , so we are expecting updates from Google Chrome and YouTube for iOS soon.
