VGA adapter for iPad and iPhone, we tested it

We’ve been testing the Apple VGA Adapter for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Perfect for sharing content with others, giving presentations, or just playing certain games. The output signal is 1080p, but only video, no audio. Scroll down to learn more.

The kings brought me from their royal store called Amazon a VGA adapter for iOS devices . As you may have imagined, this adapter basically serves to bring what we see on our iPhone, iPod or iPad to the TV or monitor. Personally I chose the VGA and not the HDMI because I’m sure I’ll use it more, being able to connect it to 99 percent of the projectors that I normally use, at university and at work.

Before you go ahead and buy it, I have to warn you! Both of them, they just mirror , show in mirror mode or in duplicate what we see on the screen, of a iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 , say that because of the hardware . Therefore, if we do not have an iPad 2 or an iPhone 4S we will only see on screen the content of those applications that are prepared such as Keynote, Safari, Video app… only compatible with iPhone 4 and 4S, iPad 1 and 2, and iPod touch 4G.

We’re continuing with the analysis. As you can see in the pictures, with my iPad 2 the content is shown in mirror, except in the applications made to work with two screens: in Real Racing 2 we’ll see in the external screen the game itself, and in the iPad it will show information like the map, position, times… With Modern Combat instead we’ll see all the controls.

With GTA 3 I had problems : there was no way to rotate the external screen, I had to turn my iPad by force (in principle it’s the developer’s fault). With other applications like Safari the content is shown as it is, and in the video applications the video is shown on the external screen and on the iPad we will see only the controls.

The signal that the adapter pulls out is 1080p on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, so we’ll see the content in high definition perfectly. However, if it is purchased from the iTunes Store and has DRM protection , it will not be possible to play it because of this incompressible protection . Moreover, if we want to take out the audio as well, we’ll have to do it through the headphone jack, since this adapter only transmits video, unlike HDMI.

I was not satisfied with the performance of the adapter , I expected much better. With games like Real Racing there is a important lag that prevents you from playing normally. I understand that with the HDMI adapter that doesn’t happen.

The conclusion is that if you want to share content with other people without the need for Apple TV (AirPlay) whether photos, videos, websites, presentations or play sporadically at 1080p, perfect, this is your adapter, for almost 30 euros , depending on the store.
