If there is a tool that has contributed, not only to fill Apple’s coffers, but also to achieve one of the best ecosystems of all those that coexist today, that would be without a doubt the App Store. Today, the famous store, whose birth served to open up the market for applications for mobile operating systems, celebrates 5 years full of success. As it could not be otherwise, from Applesupportphonenumber we want to pay our humble tribute.
There is no doubt that today’s date is marked in red on the Infinite Loop calendars, because the App Store is five years old. As we told you a few days ago, to celebrate the anniversary of the first app store , a project that started the mobile apps revolution, Apple has decided to give away some of the best apps in its catalogue.
Far away is July 10, 2008, the date when a sober App Store, which barely had 500 apps to its credit, began its journey; over time, the offer increased exponentially until it reached the 900,000 apps available today.
During the presentation at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco last month, Tim Cook , CEO of the company, assessed the milestone:
Next, we will review the key moments , and the most transcendent games and applications, that contributed to make the App Store, one of the most innovative, revolutionary and productive virtual stores.
First steps in the App Store
The App Store opened on July 10, 2008 in 62 countries with a catalogue of 500 apps . At the end of the day, the five best-selling pay apps were Super Monkey Ball, MLB At Bat, Onmifocus, Enigmo and Cro-Mag Rally. The five most downloaded free applications were Remote, AIM, Facebook, Google Mobile and eBay Mobile.
Four days later, during its first weekend of life, it had already exceeded the first 10 million downloads. On August 2, the SEGA Super Monkey Ball game consolidated its position at the top of the rankings after reaching 300,000 downloads, with sales generating a whopping $3 million. By September 9, the App Store had surpassed 100 million downloads worldwide.
On September 25, the well-known Shazam exceeded 1.5 million downloads, and had already been used to identify 20 million songs. Despite having been developed only 5 months ago, in early December the Urbanspoon app reached 2 million downloads. The course ended with Facebook as the most popular app of the first year of the App Store with 5 million downloads.
The App Store Boom
His first 6 months of life could not have been more propitious, and the arrival of 2009 only confirmed this. Thus, on January 16 , more than 500 million global downloads were made on an App Store that already had a catalogue with more than 15,000 applications.
The figures continued to rise like crazy, and by April 4 the 1 billion download barrier had been broken, a record that was furthermore overshadowed on September 28, when the App Store download counter reached 2 billion. By then, 85,000 apps, from 125,000 developers, were available to users.
On the other hand, during the same year there were also the premieres of several illustrious applications. We are talking about Doodle Jump, a series that would get more than 10 million dollars in its version for iOS, Real Racing, an exclusive franchise for the Apple ecosystem that achieved a tremendous reception, and ESPN’s ScoreCenter, which became the most downloaded sports application.
For the second year in a row, Facebook ended up being the most downloaded application of the season, although on that occasion it had to share its laurels with a game, which many of you may have heard of: Paper Toss.
Final push to the App Store
The beginning of 2010 was marked by the launch of Angry Birds, the game that would eventually become a huge sales success. Despite the fact that its downloads were multiplied by 50, the most significant event of the year for the App Store came from Cupertino’s own multinational: the presentation of the iPad on April 3rd.
The tablet , in addition to suffocating the initial criticism that branded it as nonsense, served to kick off the creation of new categories of software , which ended up giving a definitive boost to the store , and marking the beginning of the recent history of the App Store.
The arrivals of Netflix, TIME Magazine, Cut the Rope or Instagram, contributed to the fact that on June 7th, downloads from the App Store, whose catalogue already had 225,000 titles – of which 11,000 were specially designed for the iPad – , had exceeded 5 billion in the 90 countries where it was available. By then, sales of apps and games had brought their developers a total of $1 billion.

It is clear that the App Store can boast of more than enviable numbers that will continue to grow steadily in the years to come. However, its real achievement, the key to its success, lies in the amount of time users spend using their iDevices . And may you accomplish many more!
