TiVo was one of the platforms that had bet on bringing its service to Apple TV by making the device compatible with Apple’s through an official app. However, the development of the app is now in limbo , without any security that it will finally become a reality.
A change in the company’s strategy seems to have been the main factor why TiVo is no longer so interested in offering its device users the tvOS app. In addition to this, technical problems have been encountered during the last year of development.
As explained by TiVo Vice President Ted Malone to TechHive at CES 2020, the app is no longer actively developed and the project is on hold . The app was expected to be released at the end of 2019, but it seems that there is no longer any release date. The same goes for the app for Roku devices.
According to Ted, the company’s bet is now on to bring out the Android TV app , which will arrive with an update soon to TiVo Stream 4K users. On the other hand, India that in developing the app for Android TV can easily also develop the Amazon Fire TV by having the same base. But as for the Apple TV or Roku app… “they’re in limbo.
Another company spokesperson later added that the apps are “on hold” because of the prioritization of other projects:
On AppleHow to watch Apple TV+: 6 devices to watch Apple’s new streaming video service
At the moment, what TiVo has is an app for iPhone and iPad that is developed and constantly updated. Therefore, users can easily send content from one of these devices to the Apple TV if needed. We will see in the second half of the year if the cups change and return to the tvOS app.
