The Experience of Queuing for a New Apple Product: iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c
Today was a long-awaited day for all those who wanted to renew their iPhone or start their first steps in the Apple world through the new smartphones of the block: the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c.
Although it was the first time I attended this type of launch, due in large part to not being sure if I would like the circus-like atmosphere that seems to be present in all Apple’s launches, I was able to see first-hand the charm that also resides in them. Next, I will tell you how has been the launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in Barcelona.
Arrival at 5:30 a.m.: over 100 people were already waiting to get their hands on the new iPhones
As I said, I’m not usually a regular at this kind of events, so due to my lack of knowledge about what time would be the right time to start the line, I decided to go at 5:30, a prudent time that at least ensured I could get the model I was looking for.
Said and done, at that time I was already inside the La Maquinista shopping centre, where one of the two Apple stores in Catalonia is located and , emblematic as none other for being the first official Apple store in Spain . Would I be one of the first? Big mistake, we should not underestimate the power of Apple to attract customers.
In front of me more than 100 people were waiting , some with clear symptoms of having been outdoors for many hours. The preparation of some of them was enviable and I began to wonder if perhaps I should have brought my iPad to keep me company: folding chairs, blankets, sleeping bags and all kinds of electronic devices to make the wait more pleasant.
I was lucky to meet some very nice people in line and, as the hours went by, we were commenting on the latest Apple releases , as well as the apple products we each owned. I was surprised to see how the employees of the Apple Store were working all night setting up the new store windows to promote the two new terminals.
7:00 a.m.: preparing for the arrival of the new iPhone
At about 7:00 a.m. and with the first rays of the sun over Barcelona’s sky, Apple employees began their usual card distribution. It was curious for those of us who were in line for the first time, but it shows the great organization that Cupertino’s people have for this type of event.
Basically, different store employees asked each member of the queue individually which model they wanted to buy. Beyond being an excellent method of organization, it also allows you to know in advance if the model you want to buy is sold out or not. Luckily, the 16Gb iPhone 5s in a white model was available.
We should also add that they gave us bottles of water, coffees and croissants for all of us who were waiting in line. Without a doubt, it is to be thanked.
8:00 a.m.: let the show begin
Punctually, a few seconds before 8:00, all the employees of the Apple Store gathered at the entrance of the store to do the countdown, followed by numerous cheers and applause. The first lucky ones in line came in one by one, with the traditional aisle and the chorus of their names.
Within half an hour of opening the doors, the aisle had virtually disappeared and all Apple employees were busy tending to the new owners of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. However, the attention continued to be personalized at all times and each customer was treated individually until they decided to leave the store.
I finally got my turn, Alex, one of the workers at the Apple Store, was very friendly at all times, even joking about how tired he seemed after many hours of queuing. Despite his offer to help me set up the device, I decided to do it myself, after the corresponding rest my body needed after the long wait.
However, before leaving, I stopped for a moment to take a closer look at the new gold iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c. From the first one I can say that it is much more elegant than it looks in the photos and from the second one I can highlight its great touch and comfort when holding it in my hand.
In short, a totally recommendable experience for all those who like Apple and its products. Don’t worry, even though you may find the staging a bit embarrassing, it’s only worth it for the magnificent and interesting conversations you can have while waiting with people who share your same tastes and hobbies in the technological field.
Shall I repeat? Of course, and I hope that some of you will also dare to do so, you will have a pleasant and fun time.
