How to keep the folders at the top when sorting by name in Sierra

It is probably one of the features that I miss most from the Windows File Explorer and after many years, it finally came to the Sierra MacOS. I am talking about the possibility that Finder offers us when showing us the content of any folder and it is the possibility of keeping the folders on top of the computer by name. That is, show us first all the folders together, sorted alphabetically and then all the files together also sorted in the same way.

As I was saying, this way of organizing the folder view has been in Windows (and other operating systems) since the beginning of time, but Apple had not decided to take it to its Mac operating system. Luckily this has changed with the arrival of Sierra and I must say that I’m very happy that they have made this decision.

Although the possibility of keeping the folders on top when sorting by name in Sierra or higher macOS is now present, it is not activated by default, so if as I missed this possibility in the following lines I explain how to activate it step by step.

1.- The first thing we must do is open a Finder window.

2.- Once the window is open, click on Finder in the top menu bar and choose the option Preferences .

3.- In the new window that appears, click on the tab Advanced .

4.- We will see a series of options and we must activate the last one Keep the folders at the top when ordering by name .

After activating the option, we can close the Finder Preferences window and from that moment on, all the folders in which we keep their contents ordered by name will be shown with the folders above and then the rest of the files they contain.

I’m sure this option will please all of you who have been Windows users for many years. For me it was one of the things that I missed most from my time on the Microsoft platform, I had a hard time getting used to the way macOS had to display the folders and files (mixed alphabetically without making distinction) and I am very happy to have this possibility now available from macOS Sierra.
