The Samsung Galaxy S7 has been introduced, is it better than the iPhone 6s? Let’s compare them

Today a new edition of the largest mobile device fair in the world has started. As you know, it takes place in Barcelona, and a few minutes ago we were able to see the public and official presentation of what could be the contender of the year for the iPhone 6s, Samsung Galaxy S7. The high end of the android market is already reaching disproportionate proportions , but in order to compete one-on-one with the biggest players, it will first have to face the all-powerful iPhone 6s in today’s comparison.

Maybe this year you want to change your terminal, you need to retire your old iPhone 4s and you would like to take the step towards the new generation of Apple presented a few months ago. However, the Android scene also brings out some attractive and powerful terminals. The flagship of the big Samsung has been introduced a few minutes ago, and the Galaxy S7 may be the alternative to your old mobile, or maybe not .

Before comparing each of the sections, it would not be out of place to have an overview of the most outstanding features offered by these two amazing terminals on paper :

Taking as a reference the data provided in the previous table, on paper the Galaxy S7 is the clear winner in this section . The South Korean manufacturer’s terminal houses a data processing chip with greater speed and power, twice as much RAM, and a battery with a much longer range. This data would make us think that the S7 would make the Apple phone bite the dust in a performance battle, but we will focus on this later, because all that glitters is not gold .

On another note, the iPhone 6s presented the 3D Touch technology as a major new feature of its flagship terminal. This enables the iPhone 6s to detect up to three levels of finger pressure on the screen . Each of these levels can be linked to an action depending on the application we use. This is a new way of interacting with the terminal interface.

As far as autonomy is concerned, we cannot yet say how well the S7 is performing because of its recent release to the public. What we can be sure of is the points in its favour that the fast, wireless charging gives it against its opponent, the iPhone 6s. However, the battery life will depend, and much, on the resolution offered by each terminal, data that we will comment now.

Even though both screens are very similar in size , their resolutions are very different. Compared to the 4.7 inches of the iPhone 6s, we have the 5.2 inches of the new Samsung Galaxy S7. On paper it wouldn’t seem like a very significant difference, but in person it is noticeable. The battle for 2K and 4K resolutions is well underway, and it’s clear that the most fashionable resolution in the Android scene, 1440×2560, looks great, but for the screen sizes that are handled in both worlds (iOS and Android) with the resolution of the iPhone 6s, 1334×750, we have plenty .

We cannot say that this point is as objective as possible, since it depends quite a lot on each person’s criteria. Samsung favorably transformed its design in the move from S5 to S6, and this year has maintained the look and construction materials of its flagship terminal. For its part, Apple has always used a premium construction and the appearance of all its devices is far from being in the low, medium or even high quality category.

Both the Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6s received harsh criticism regarding the protrusion of their cameras. The new edition of Samsung Galaxy has seen this volume reduced significantly . But it’s a minor detail that only the most obsessed people notice.

There is one aspect that was attributed to the previous version of the Samsung phone, and that was the water and dust resistance that the Galaxy S5 did offer. On this occasion, this feature, so much in demand and accused in the current terminal of the firm returns through the big door with the IP68 protection . This is in contrast to the water (1.5 metres deep for 30 minutes) and dust protection of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which have not achieved IP certification.

This section could possibly be the beginning of a story with no end in sight. Much has already been said about the differences between iOS and Android and whether or not one launches a feature present on the other system in its next version. It is not surprising that Android wants to increase the hardware theme to achieve similar or better performance than iOS . This gave the iPhone 6s in 2015 the title of the most powerful phone according to some benchmarks .

The Galaxy S7 runs the latest version of Google’s operating system, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. On the other hand, the Apple terminal runs on iOS 9. We cannot say that significant changes have been made between the previous versions of each operating system and the latest one, since both of them devote their updates to mature and optimize a little more the general operation and performance .

However, Apple knows that its system goes better than Android on its terminals , and always plays with that trump card in its presentations. The performance of iOS 9 on the iPhone 6s is impeccable. The differences are clear, as Samsung must always adapt the latest Android update to its Touch Wiz customization layer , which ultimately affects the performance of the terminal. On the other hand, Apple doesn’t really have to worry about any layers on its system, so its handsets run iOS natively and without stories, so updates are faster than on the Samsung handset. In addition, iOS does not need as much RAM as on Android to run perfectly .

A novelty, for better and for worse, of the new S7 camera is its size and resolution, respectively. While the sensor of the S6 had a good size (12.6″), the new model of the Asian firm goes up to 12.5″ (they have called it Dual Pixel technology), which means larger pixels that capture more light. In contrast, its resolution has been lowered from 16 to 12.2 megapixels. In this section, and seeing the great results of the iPhone 6s since its launch, we could not make an exact assessment of the value of the new camera of the S7.

For its part, we could already see how well the Cupertino’s flagship recorded 4K video. This camera, along with its resolution and the front camera flash, were the highlights with which iPhone 6s was presented. Both devices have great cameras , and we can not say that one is better than the other, but the ease and speed with which the Apple device makes captures and video in very high resolution, are amazing.

In view of the aspects reviewed above, we cannot guarantee a winner until we know some more aspects related to performance and autonomy after several weeks of use of the new Samsung device. But our first impressions could tip the balance in favor of the Apple terminal, by issues of performance, design and camera . However, we can’t deny that the new Galaxy S7 is full of power and beauty on all sides , especially if we look at its edge , with an improved design.

We would not be surprised if, in light of what happened this afternoon at the MWC in Barcelona, Apple brings out its cards sooner rather than later and presents some new version of its star terminal of 2015 to demolish all expectations and hype generated by Samsung’s latest device.
