Qualcomm has introduced its new Snapdragon 855 chip at its Snapdragon Tech Summit, a chip that will be targeted at Android premium smartphones in 2019. It’s unclear which smartphones will end up with this processor, though.
Attendees at the Snapdragon 855 introductory event have been very positive about the Qualcomm chip:
But there is a small problem, the Android premium smartphone segment is not very large and is still far behind the performance of Apple’s mobile phones . The low sales of the Galaxy S9 will lead Samsung to focus on marketing mid-range phones like its Galaxy J line and to opt for Exynos chips.
Huawei has also developed its own chips Kirin , which is not very suitable for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips.
In addition, as mentioned previously, consumers of Android devices are not demanding high performance devices, but lower prices .
It must be embarrassing to Qualcomm that Apple managed to deliver an A12 Bionic chip manufactured by a 7-nanometer process before they did. What’s more, the performance of Apple’s iPhone is far greater than the performance of Snapdragon processors, although many other factors such as software play a role.
