RTVE releases new app on Apple TV to watch their series

As Sergeant Horvath said in Saving Private Ryan, “It’s on.” At last one of the big television networks in Spain, Radio Televisión Española, has launched its first app for Apple TV . The public channel has taken the opportunity to put on it, free of charge, all the series created to date.

RTVE a la carta puts in our salon through this app more than 150 series with 3700 hours of reproduction, according to the channel itself. We have been testing the app for the last two days and can now share our impressions about it. Is there a fan of El Ministerio del Tiempo in the room?

A la carte, that’s the new app for RTVE’s Apple TV

The first thing we’ll see when we launch the new RTVE app on Apple TV is that has a familiar design . Its layout is similar to other apps that allow you to watch movies and series, from Netflix or iTunes itself. In the main menu we’ll have the most outstanding series occupying a large carousel. The most popular RTVE series will appear there.

RTVE is the first Spanish television channel to launch its own app for Apple TV

This is where you can find veteran series like Tell me how it happened and more recent and successful ones like The Ministry of Time. By clicking on any series throughout this app, we will access the file with all the chapters and seasons that are available at that time. However, in series such as The Time Ministry, the content has yet to be updated with this week’s chapter (although the chapter appears separately on the main menu).

A very interesting feature is the one that allows us to mark a series as a favorite. With more than 150 series in total, covering recent years and others where Imanol Arias has no grey hair, being able to organize and customize the app with our favorites is a great advantage . When you bookmark a series, it will appear in the My Favorite Series section of the main menu, giving us a very convenient shortcut.

In this same menu, we will also have chapters ordered chronologically according to their emission (this is where we will find the last chapter of The Ministry of Time).

Other interesting features

The RTVE A la Carte app for Apple TV also has a number of other interesting features. Apart from a menu in which the series are organized by genre and where we will find children’s content (although still scarce) such as The Worlds of Yupi or Sesame Street, we have a content search engine.

Since the last tvOS update, we can now use dictation to enter text in the search fields. So, while looking for a series to see in this app we can dictate “Acacias 38” or “Curro Jimenez” or any other we want to see.

More current series can be viewed in high definition, although this is not always the norm and there is no way to distinguish HD content from Full HD or any other resolution. Another disadvantage we see in this app is the absence of subtitles, an option we hope to see in the future with an app update.

Apple TV (2015), análisis: la revolución será televisada.

We would also like to see in the future the integration with Siri’s search along tvOS , so we can ask you to start our favorite series from anywhere. All in all, this is a very interesting first version but with some details to polish. We hope that the RTVE app for Apple TV will encourage other channels to do the same.
