It’s funny that the Microsoft Office helper was created from a Mac. So stated its creator Kevan Atteberry in an interview.

Remembering Clippy, Microsoft’s assistant

Many of you will still remember this character that we loved and hated at the same time. It was Clippy, a little animated clip that helped us with our Microsoft Office tasks. This little clip could be found in the 1997 Office package until made its last appearance in 2007. The creator of this character, Kevan Atteberry, has told some details of his work. He even mentions that there were more than 250 candidates in the selection, and he was chosen.

The interview with Kevan Atteberry

Kevan Atteberry, creator of Clippy

I was originally working on a project called Microsoft Bob, which was probably his biggest failure. When Bob crashed, we took the help with a more text-focused character. We designed about 250 characters, and I had about 15 or 20 of them in that country. Through working with some social psychologists outside of Stanford, we spent six months going through all of them.

He also mentioned something that we all thought and he, as a creator, acknowledges it in a funny way.

They hate it! And you know what? That’s good. Any press is good press. But to be honest, not everyone hates it. I get a dozen e-mails from people who loved Clippy.

Perhaps the most interesting thing comes here. Atteberry created Clippy from a Mac.

As much as people hated Clippy, when I meet “the fans”, they say, “Oh, God hated him! That’s great!” But I completely understand the annoyance factor. I don’t really experience it myself, because I’m a Mac guy. In fact, I designed Clippy on a Mac.

The full interview can be read here. It’s really not wasted.

Did it surprise you that this small clip, which was sometimes too heavy, was created on a Mac?
