WhatsApp is the most downloaded app on the planet, whether you have an iPhone or an Android phone. And that, you don’t want it to show: hackers and scammers look for any excuse to try and sneak it in , with malware in general, but with a special interest in phishing and hoaxes. However, a few days ago we discovered how the iPhone could be hacked through WhatsApp, to give you an idea of the risk involved. But nowadays what is “in” is the kidnapping of WhatsApp accounts.
Yes, you read correctly: they hijack your WhatsApp profile and like any other hijack, they ask you for money for it . As they report in the newspaper Noticias de Navarra, in just a few weeks a score of Navarrese people have been kidnapped and this number continues to grow. How do they do it? Do we have anything to fear? How can we protect ourselves?
WhatsApp kidnapping, a very dangerous risk
The hijacking of WhatsApp is a very simple and efficient social engineering trick . They simply install the app on any mobile phone and enter a random phone number, that of the victim.
As you may know, it is only possible to have one WhatsApp profile per phone number – unless you follow this trick to have two WhatsApps on one phone -, so as soon as you enter your number, the application asks for the verification code, which usually arrives as an SMS message to that number.
How do they get your verification code? Under any pretext they write to you, but not from an unknown number. They will contact you via a number they have already hijacked before and which belongs to one of your contacts. As you can see, WhatsApp’s hijacking is spreading like wildfire. It may sound strange, but because the person who writes to you is an acquaintance, you believe it and give it to them.
Crass error: with your code they already got your WhatsApp account and you lost it . To make sure you can’t get it back, they activate the double check pin so that the only way you can get your WhatsApp account is to meet their requirements, i.e. you will have to pay. And they will contact you to do so.

If it’s too late, we’ll just have to try to contact the administrators of WhatsApp to try and get the account back , although this is a process that takes several days. Another option is to contact your telemarketer and request a number change, but this is a very traumatic change and you will have to start from scratch.
Finally, if this happens, you must contact the authorities and file a complaint so that you do not go unpunished. And never pay .
