Syncing calendars between your Mac and iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad without paying a fee

For those of us who will enjoy iCloud, it will be very convenient to synchronize calendars and contacts. But for those of you who will not be able to enjoy iOS5, there is still a solution which I have decided to share here with all of you.

The other day I was telling you how to sync our contacts between a Mac and an iPhone or iPod touch.

Remember that with iCloud this will not be necessary , since with this service everything will be direct and configurable without any further complications, but for those who will not be able to enjoy iOS 5 it will surely be perfect .

What we’ll need:

  • One Mac (if you set it up on more than one, you’ll simply have iCal synchronized on the other Macs as well.
  • A GMail account (it’s the same as the other day, the one for contacts, since we’ll be using Google Calendar).
  • An iOS device.

First, we have to open iCal and select the Preferences submenu under the iCal option (use the redundancy). Once there, press the + sign to add a new account .

We then configure it as follows:

  • Account type: CalDAV Account name: our Gmail address that we’ve created
  • Password: The password we put in our Gmail account.
  • Server: www.google.com

Then we click on Create , and if we have done all the steps correctly, it will tell us Checking user account… , Setting up CalDav account… . Finally, the wizard will exit .

Now we’ll see that in the tab Accounts the one we just set up has been added (here we can select the refresh rate for the calendars). In the Delegates tab, we can select which of them we want to synchronize between Google and iCal. The disadvantage is that you have to create the calendars from Google (or I have not found how to do it from the application itself).

So much for the iCal part. Now, let’s get the iPod touch .

First we select Settings , then Mail, contacts, calendars . Once inside, we have to click on Add account… and then Others .

Once inside the option Other, we give to the option “Add CalDAV account”, and we configure with the following parameters :

  • Server: www.google.com
  • Username: Our Gmail address that we’ve created.
  • Password: The password we put in our Gmail account.
  • Description: Anything (this is not part of the configuration, it is simply so that we can distinguish the calendar in case we have more than one configured).

Next, we hit “Next” and will verify the account data, configure it… as iCal did with Google .

Moreover, in the same way as the other day with the Contacts , not only will we be able to access iCal from the Mac and our iOS devices, but will also be possible to consult it from Google Calendar (remember that a modification in one of the three sites will be reflected in the rest ).
