Standalone driving or Street View, what does Apple do?

Since their release, Apple’s maps have come in for a lot of criticism for their poor accuracy and continued failure. At the moment the situation has improved quite a bit, but they are still not up to the competition and it seems that the company could be looking for alternatives to improve their accuracy; one of them could be the use of street-level photos, something similar to Google’s Street View .

In the last few weeks, Dodge cars have started to be seen around California. These cars are equipped with a LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) system on the roof and one of them is rented by Apple . This system is composed of: laser scanner, a GPS system and an inertial navigation system (INS). Thanks to all this technology, the cars are able to measure the distance by illuminating an object with the laser and analysing the reflected light. This technology was used by firms such as Google, Nokia or TomTom to create their mapping services.

Some experts believe that this system seen in the cars that circulate in California could be related to the autonomous driving projects that several companies are developing, although this seems unlikely, since Apple is not one of the six companies authorized to carry out experiments on cars without a driver.

The most plausible explanation for all this is that Cupertino’s company is doing the first tests to create his “Steet View” and with it improve the quality and accuracy of his maps . Of course we can’t confirm that this is the case and we will certainly not leave any doubt until the company makes an announcement.

Be it one or the other, we always love to see that Cupertino’s offices are not standing still and continue to experiment to improve their services or simply launch new functions or completely new products.
