Today at Apple sessions are one of the cornerstones of the next-generation Apple Store. In these sessions different experts talk about a specific topic for the attendees and try to teach and help them through the Apple devices. The experts are usually artists, photographers, health specialists, audiovisual experts… but do they charge for this work?

Apparently, some artists who have done sessions for Today at Apple are not entirely satisfied with how they are compensated. According to a report by KQED, up to 11 artists have confirmed that Apple does not offer any monetary compensation, at least in the Today at Apple sessions held at the Apple stores in San Francisco. Instead, they are compensated with Apple products such as AirPods, Apple TV, and Apple Watch Series 3.

While it is true that Apple compensates these artists, perhaps it would be better to do so with a universal good such as money, which opens up many more possibilities and is not as limited as a specific product. On the other hand, there is also the idea that the artist has the possibility of collaborating with Apple and making himself known. The problem is that, according to them, many times the promotion is very basic since neither Today at Apple has official accounts nor the official accounts promote the events as much as they should.

As always, this kind of thing has to be taken with tweezers, as there is no official information from Apple to see if this practice is indeed common or only in specific cases. In any case, at the end is a mutual agreement by the artist and Apple , if both agree it is carried out and if not it is not carried out. This does not mean that it is right to pay an artist with goods and recognition.

We recently had a similar case with the ‘Shot on iPhone’ contest. On that occasion there was no compensation for the winners of the contest beyond their name appearing on the promotional images, images that Apple would use for its own advertising. However, Apple quickly rectified this and ensured that the contest winners would be rewarded financially. On that occasion it seemed to be more of a misdirection than something intentional.
