Samsung has already shown its hand and the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are now a reality. The company has made a big bet in terms of hardware with its new device and in the following lines we want to compare the features with those of what will be its main rivals in the market: the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus; at least until Apple announces the next generation of its devices.
The new high-end terminals of the South Korean company will reach the first buyers on April 20th for those who book before the 19th and will be in the stores from the 28th of the same month.
Want to know what makes these smartphones different? Here is the feature comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ vs. iPhone 7 and 7 Plus .
Screen, Samsung goes all out
In the section of the screen Samsung has thrown the house out of the window. Their new devices can boast amazing screens that are barely surrounded by edges .
Specifically, the S8 mounts a 5.8-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels, while the S8+ reaches 6.2 inches and the same resolution as its “little brother”.
The iPhone 7 stays in the 4.7-inch, 750-by-1,334-pixel resolution and the 7 Plus stays in the 5.5-inch, 1080-by-1920-pixel resolution.
Dimensions and weight of devices
The measurements of the devices are as follows:
- Galaxy S8: 148.8 mm high, 68.1 mm wide and 8 mm thick. 155 grams in weight.
- Galaxy S8+: 159.5 mm high, 73.4 mm wide and 8.1 mm thick. 173 grams in weight.
- iPhone 7: 138.3 mm high, 67.1 mm wide, and 7.1 mm thick. 138 grams in weight.
- iPhone 7 Plus: 158.2 mm high, 77.9 mm wide, and 7.3 mm thick. 188 grams in weight.
As you can see, the Galaxy S8 is larger and heavier than the iPhone 7, while the S8+ is lighter than the iPhone 7 Plus and the size is virtually the same, even though it’s far larger than the iPhone’s 5.5 inches.
Samsung has achieved the latter thanks to the reduction of the frames around the screen ; although for this they have needed to make a device a little thicker than its competitor.
Samsung has mounted 3000 mAh and 3500 mAh batteries in the S8 and S8+ respectively. Apple mounts 1960 mAh batteries in the iPhone 7 and 2900 mAh batteries in the Plus model.
It is clear that in terms of capacity Samsung is the clear winner in this section, although the actual autonomy is still to be determined and it will not be possible to know until the new devices reach their buyers.
Samsung continues to bet on different processors according to the market . The company will market both versions of the device with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895 processors.
The iPhone 7 has the A10 chip developed by Apple.
Samsung has chosen to integrate a new technology into the S8 and S8+: the iris scanner . Thanks to this technology, security should be improved and it will be necessary for the smartphone to “see” our eye with the front camera in order to unlock it. In addition, it also has a fingerprint reader on the back.
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus feature Touch ID, the Apple fingerprint reader integrated into the device’s front home button.
Front and rear cameras
The new S8 and S8+ feature dual 12-megapixel cameras with a maximum aperture of f/1.7 with optical image stabilizer at the rear. The front features 8 megapixel cameras with the same aperture as the rear and autofocus.
The Apple 4.8-inch display model mounts a 12-megapixel camera with maximum aperture of f/1.8 with optical stabilizer on the back and the Plus model has two dual cameras, a wide-angle camera with f/1.8 aperture and a telephoto camera with f/2.8 aperture. As for the front camera, both have 7-megapixel cameras with f/2.2 aperture.
Battery charging modes
Samsung has invested heavily in this area and its devices are equipped with wireless charging and fast charging , technologies that Apple has not integrated into any of its current smartphone models.
Android 7.0 Nougat for Samsung and iOS 10 for Apple models
The latest available version of Android is 7.1 which is not yet available for the new South Korean devices. For its part, Apple has already made available to iPhone 7 and 7 Plus users iOS version 10.3, the latest available so far.
Both S8 models are certified to IP68, while the iPhone achieves only IP67. This means that the water and dust resistance is higher in Samsung devices and it is possible to use them under water without any problem.
Both versions of the new Samsung device come with 64 GB of storage and can be expanded to 256 GB using microSD cards.
iPhone is available in 32, 128, and 256GB capacities but cannot be expanded using memory cards.
iPhone 7 has 2GB of RAM and iPhone 7 Plus has 3GB. The new computers from the South Korean company come equipped with 4GB of RAM.
Samsung has decided to introduce the USB-C port on its new smartphones , the same type of port used by the latest MacBook Pro released to the market. The also features a 3.5mm mini-jack headphone connector .
iPhone 7 uses Apple’s proprietary Lightning port and does not have a mini-jack connector.
Will the S8 get the iPhone out of the way?
Comparing the new Samsung model with the iPhone 7 is not entirely fair, as the Apple device has been on the market for about a year, but there is certainly no denying that the technical features of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are truly impressive .
On paper it looks like the perfect terminal and is sure to be well received by all users of high-end Android devices. Will it be enough to beat the iPhone in sales? Will Samsung get current iPhone users? And, the most important question for us, will it have any effect on Apple’s plans for the next generation of the iPhone with which it will also have to deal?
