One of the new features of Safari in Big Sur, the new Mac operating system currently in beta, is HEVC support. Thanks to this support we can now enjoy Netflix movies in 4K and HDR .
Netflix has been offering 4K content for quite some time, but until now Macs have not supported the codec needed for viewing. With Big Sur Safari, it’s fully HEVC compliant, so you can stream content from Netflix and other platforms in 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, and HDR10 .
The requirements for viewing 4K content in HDR via streaming are Big Sur MacOS, which is currently in beta, and a 2018 or later Mac . In fact, AirPlay 2 on iOS 14 also has support for 4K streaming, so it makes sense that compatibility would be across all platforms.
This new support comes with the arrival of the VP9 codec for apps on iOS 14 and tvOS 14 that will allow us to watch YouTube videos on 4K HDR . A compatibility that we hope will arrive also to Safari 14 for Big Sur macOS.

It is clear that new versions of operating systems contain more surprises than they appear at first glance. These new compatibilities, even if they seem just a detail, open the door to better services and more options.
