Parallels Desktop 12 for Mac

When I got back to having a Mac almost six years ago, I never thought about running Windows on it . All the programs I needed from the Microsoft platform I could use on my work computer. But it’s been a long time since I stopped using my Dell with Windows 7.

However, we are not here to talk about Windows 10, an operating system that Javier Pastor already analyzed in detail in Xataka. This is a review of Parallels Desktop 12 , the popular software for running Windows 10 on your Mac that has been recently updated. Many users still need to use specific software not found in macOS, so the Parallels tool is a must have.

Using a Microsoft operating system again, especially one as different from Windows 7 as Windows 10, has been less familiar than I expected. Many things have changed along the way . So many that sometimes you don’t know where to start.

Windows 10 has changed quite a bit since the last time I used it seriously with a Dell and Windows 7.

But before that point, you need to purchase a license for Parallels Desktop 12 to install on your Mac. For new users, there is a £79.99 license . If you’re coming from Parallels Desktop 10 or 11, you’ll only need to upgrade your software for $49.99. You will need to purchase a Windows 10 license separately from Microsoft or use one of their trial versions.

Parallels Desktop 12 continues to prove itself as the best software for running Windows on your Mac

Parallels Desktop 12 will ask you during the installation of Windows 10 what your primary use of the operating system will be, and where you want to install it. You will also be asked if you want to install their new toolbox, which we will discuss later.

Once you have installed Windows 10, you will need to create a username and password . And you’re ready to use your Mac as if it were a PC.

Parallels Desktop 12: What’s New

The Cortana support and other great new features were added with last year’s update, so Parallels Desktop 12 is not a big jump. But it does bring some exciting enhancements that make it all worthwhile. These are the most important ones:

It deserves a special mention a series of new tools that facilitate common actions only in macOS. There are twenty in total and they include among them:

  • An alarm to create reminders.
  • File compressor.
  • Screenshot.
  • Video capture and converter.
  • Hide desk.

Some features are useful, others you’ll already have on your Mac with another app. Either way, they’re welcome to any user and round out the experience.

Some points of improvement

Overall, the experience has been satisfactory. Being able to use the new Microsoft software on a Mac with Parallels Desktop 12 without compromise will be perfect for many users . An interesting detail is that when we connect our iPhone, Parallels will ask us in which operating system we want to manage it. Despite all the new features in this version, there are two clear points of improvement.

En Apple
First of all, it manages the resolution of the Windows 10 screen. My 13-inch MacBook Pro is a 2011 non-retinal model and I haven’t been able to change the resolution at all. Neither from the Windows control panel, where it remains anchored at 1024 x 768, nor from Parallels settings.

The twelfth version of Parallels Desktop is updated regularly, so we expect these issues to be resolved in the future

In the latter, there is supposed to be a section dedicated to video within the hardware section where you can modify the resolution. This section does not exist in my case . This may be because it’s a 2011 MacBook Pro with no retina, but I haven’t been able to fix it.

The second point of improvement is the management of Parallels Desktop 12 settings. In my search for solutions, I have seen that the virtual machine settings are distributed in different places in the app. This can sometimes make it too complicated to make a change in it.

However, Parallels is constantly making improvements and releasing updates. The twelfth version of this virtual machine is still one of the best ways to get Windows on your Mac.
