Lock Slideshow ( gratuito, App Store )

The iPhone lock screen has been one of the most unexplored territories in iOS, virtually since its release. Apple does not offer developers the possibility to alter the operating system, therefore access to modifications of things like the lock screen has been impossible. However, already in 2008 we talked about the company’s plans to improve it in the future.

With iOS 5, Apple has been providing tools for developers to access and change more of that screen. It is now possible for any music application to display the album cover, and not just the official system player as before. Which is what makes the latest version of Spotify, for example, or Downcast, the fabulous podcast player ( among others ).

Some applications have tried to change the lock screen in more artisanal ways, and recently applications have appeared that take advantage of this new functionality in iOS 5 to display not only the covers of a music player, but also the weather forecast or, in the case of the application in question, Lock Slideshow , any image from different services.

With this simple application, our iPhone will display any image from the sources we select , randomly if we wish, on the lock screen. You can use photos from your Facebook account, from any iPhone photo album or from music covers you have installed. As a curiosity, the comment with which we uploaded our photo to Facebook will appear below the time.

We can customize the time in which the images are changed, from 30 seconds to 12 hours. We can also indicate that the images are repeated, select a specific album from our iPhone, Facebook or particular disc. To activate the application, just hit the small “Play” button in the upper left corner. Although it is not about playing any music, but “telling” the application to start.

I’ve tried it for hours and I don’t notice any drop in battery power ( is still an application that must remain in multitasking to work ), since it’s simple and its task doesn’t need a lot of system resources. Lock Slideshow is completely free , and very useful if you get bored looking for wallpapers or want to customize your device a little more.
