Sometimes what counts is having a good user base. iTunes Radio has used that to surpass in popularity Spotify in the US, with 8% of users over 12 using it during the past month at least once. That puts it as the third most used music service in the U.S., relegating Spotify to fourth place with 6% usage.
iheartRadio is the second most used service with a 9% share (iTunes Radio is expected to surpass it by the end of this year), and much further away is the champion Pandora with 31% of Americans using it. As long as Apple does not expand access to its online radio to all other countries, overcoming that is impossible.
However, that 8% usage of iTunes Radio translates into the healthy figure of 20 million people using it and in the United States alone. Not bad for an Apple that screwed up big time with Ping, which wanted to be a musical social network supported by the iTunes catalogue. Little by little and with good lyrics, Cupertino is catching up with the music market with more optimistic figures.
