Just a few hours ago, Chinese startup Xiaomi unveiled an amazing terminal. It’s the Mi Mix, which our colleagues from Xataka have written about all its details. A gigantic smartphone with 6.4 inches but which keeps an ace up its sleeve to reduce the dimensions: an almost frameless front.
The ceramic finish of this phone, together with the very small frame it has, makes us wonder one thing: Is the Xiaomi Mi Mix a preview of the iPhone that we will see in 2017? Let’s break it down.
A ceramic terminal
Just yesterday we were talking about how hard it was for the 2017 iPhone to be made of ceramic. This idea was being considered since next year would be the 10th anniversary of the launch of the original iPhone . This is why many believe that it will be a special product , for which Apple could change the aluminium for a ceramic composite.
Several experts dismissed the idea of Apple creating an iPhone Edition for next year, given the magnitude of the change required in the manufacturing process. The amount of machinery needed as well as its cost and construction time did not match the level of demand and requirements of an iPhone. Manufacturing a single iPhone is feasible. The challenge of creating 70 million iPhones in ceramics is another story.
The necessary volume of terminals to be manufactured by Apple makes a ceramic iPhone a practically impossible task
Despite this, the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has managed to present its proposal for a ceramic terminal. The company itself calls it a “concept”, but the truth is that we already have a launch date and price. Xiaomi has shown that it is possible to create a ceramic terminal, although the scale at which it must be manufactured is very different.
No doubt a change of material would be something interesting for next year’s iPhone. Other materials that are being speculated on in the pools is Liquid Metal , a metal for which Apple has the manufacturing license and with which it would not need to modify its current machinery as much as with the ceramic compound.
A frame reduced to its minimum expression
The other big innovation in the design of the Mi Mix is the almost non-existent frame of the terminal. Neither in the upper part nor in the sides, the only frame we find is in the lower part . This means that 91.3% of the front surface is screen.
The almost total absence of frames is another of the rumors that exist for next year’s iPhone. The new iPhone 7 home button is no longer physical , a step that many consider necessary for its definitive disappearance next year. Without the home button, Apple could reduce the top frames more freely.

The stumbling block that Apple would have to solve is Touch ID. While Xiaomi has chosen to place the fingerprint reader on the back like other manufacturers do, there are several patents that indicate that Apple would seek to integrate it into the screen itself.
Otro modo de mejorar el sensor TouchID: añadiendo Force Touch con esta patente.
The iPhone frames have been a recent target of criticism, especially from competitors who have managed to reduce them considerably. However, Apple has not felt any rush to reduce them in its recently released iPhone 7. Therefore, many are betting that we will see changes in this direction next year.
Xiaomi has proposed an attractive terminal in design after a 2015 in which their sales targets failed. The firm aimed to sell 100 million terminals during the year, a figure that remained at only 70 million. In any case, we will see if Apple takes note for the iPhone of 2017 . Something for which there are still about ten months left.
