Everything you need to know about Home Sharing and how it works in iOS 4.3

Once the iOS 4.3 Hotspot option has been shown and its operation has been confirmed, there is another great feature in this new version of iOS available for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. We are talking about the Home Sharing function .

This feature is not new and has been available on iTunes for some time. The difference now is that you can use this feature to use our iTunes library from any iOS computer.

Until now, the Home Sharing feature was limited to Macs, so the libraries could only be accessed from another iTunes. Now, in addition to that option, we can also replace the library of our iOS system with that of our Mac at any time without using any synchronization.

I have to admit that it cost me a good deal to find the configuration of such a function, and that is that Apple knows how to make very good designs and interfaces, but sometimes it seems that iOS is about to “explode” and the new features seem to be shoehorned into what has already been designed so as not to have to make great efforts (AirPlay button).

After a search on the Apple website and getting lost in the different menus of the system, I managed to find the option that allows us to configure our Home Sharing account on our iOS team. This option can be found in the iPod menu in the Device Settings.

For the new option to work properly we have to do a few steps:

  • The first and most important is to enable the option within iTunes. This option can be found in the program settings, under the heading Share. Inside it we will have to activate the last box: “The computers and devices…”
  • If we have never activated this option before we will have to enter our Apple ID to associate our Apple account with our library.
  • Once our account is set up, we will have to access the commented option within the iOS settings and add our user account.
  • Now we can access the “iPod” application in which we can check how a new section called “Shared” appears.
  • In this section we can select the different libraries added and synchronized with the device.
  • Once the library is selected, our team will switch to the iTunes library but remotely.

This configuration is identical for all iOS devices . The only difference with the iPad is where the button to modify our library is located.

The operation, once the library has been changed, is identical to that of using the local library of the device and in the case of a fast network the waiting times and gaps are null for almost any type of device.

As a curiosity, the videos on the iPad are shown independently from the iPod application, so to access them we will have to go to the video application where they are grouped in the traditional way. When we enter we’ll see how a new section called “shares” appears.
