VLC Media Player for iOS, tvOS and macOS now available

This Friday afternoon we were surprised by an important news: VideoLAN has launched the third big version of VLC Media Player , basically the most popular video file player in the world. And of course, it is compatible with iOS, tvOS and macOS. VLC 3.0 comes almost six years after its predecessor, VLC 2.0.

This is not just any update. The volunteer programmers working on the VLC project have been working for years to revamp the core of the player, redoing it so that a single code can be compatible across all platforms. In addition, more than 1,500 bugs have been fixed, something that has not happened since the release of the 2.2 version of the VLC in 2015.

The main improvements in VLC 3.0 are hardware acceleration of 4K and 8K video playback , accepting the H264 and H265 codecs. HDR 10 and 260 degree videos are also accepted, and Chromecast support even opens up to DVD playback.

In the specific case of iOS we have performance and battery consumption improvements, and in macOS we have new APIs that improve the general operation of VLC. You can download VLC 3.0 for MacOS here. The iOS version will appear as an update momentarily in the App Store.
