Apple announced this last week during the iPhone 7, Apple Watch Series 2 and AirPods launch event and have kept their word: iOS 10 is now available worldwide for all compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users.
As usual with Apple operating systems, iOS 10 is completely free for all users and there are two ways to upgrade: via iTunes or from the device itself via OTA (Over The Air).
Pre-Upgrade Considerations for iOS 10
Before we go ahead and upgrade our compatible devices to iOS 10, there are a few things to consider.
The first, and for us the most important, is to make a full backup before doing the installation. In the previous link you will find the steps explaining how to make a backup through iTunes or directly in iCloud. This point is important because, in case of problems during the update, our data will always be safe.
It is also important to note that this is the first public version of a new operating system. In the last few months Apple has released a lot of beta versions to detect bugs, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be problems when it reaches all users, especially from incompatibility of apps and the like. That’s why it might be advisable to wait three or four days for an update so that others can find the problems if they really are.
Another point to keep in mind if you’re going to upgrade immediately is that the download time can be very long . Millions of devices around the world are trying to access the new version of iOS and this manages to saturate Apple’s servers. This is why we may have trouble downloading the update quickly and it may be advisable to wait a couple of days before upgrading.
Now that we have clarified these points a bit, we can get down to business and explain how to install iOS 10 .
How to upgrade to iOS 10 on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch
There are two common ways to upgrade an iDevice to iOS 10. Both are just as easy to follow and we recommend the first (upgrade via iTunes) as it usually gives less problems than the second (upgrade via OTA).
Upgrade via iTunes to iOS 10
To upgrade our iDevice to iOS 10 via iTunes we need a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed, an internet connection and the device’s USB cable.
- We opened iTunes.
- We connect the device to the computer with the USB cable.
- Click on Update in the pop-up window that will appear. In case it does not appear we must click on the icon that identifies the device and then click on the Update button.
After clicking on the Update button the download of the installation package will start and once it has finished the update will begin . All you have to do is follow the steps on the screen. After several restarts, the upgrade process will be completely finished.
Upgrade via OTA (Over The Air)
This is the second option to upgrade to iOS 10 our iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. In this case we only need to have our device, but we do need to meet a number of conditions: be connected to a WiFi network and have at least 50% battery charge in our device.
To start the update via this route we must access Settings – General – Software Update and follow the steps on the screen until the update is complete.
