I’m sure you don’t remember… Some keyboard shortcuts needed at the most inopportune time

Yes, we’ve talked about them many times, but when the time comes to need them, you don’t remember or you just don’t know. So it never hurts to remember some of the basics, maybe with repetition we will end up learning them. To be more correct, we can delimit them into simple keyboard shortcuts to get a system action using the keyboard and not the GUI, and the keystrokes to boot your Mac in a certain mode.

With the Macbook’s reduced keyboard, where we don’t have forward or backward page keys, the cursors will be in charge of replacing this function. By pressing the “Alt” key plus the cursor “up” or “down” , we will get the same result. Using “Command” and the cursor ” Left” or the “Right ” what we will get in the Finder window is to open or close the folder we have selected (or are in).

But perhaps the most important are the different boot modes of our Macs , since they are the ones we should always remember under a not very pleasant situation.

  • Pressing “X” during the boot forces the computer to boot Mac OS X, no matter if you have another boot volume indicated.
  • Pressing “C” will force your Mac to boot from the Mac OS X DVD or CD.
  • By pressing “N”, if you have a network boot volume, you can start from it.
  • With the “T” key, we can start our Mac from another Mac connected by Firewire.
  • If we press the left mouse button during the boot, we will manage to eject a CD or DVD that was locked inside the optical drive.
  • With “R” we will reset the MacBook screen trying to solve some problem that it is giving us.
  • By pressing the “Shift” key, we will start the Mac in safe mode, loading only the essential modules of the system.
  • “Command” + “V” will turn on in Verbose mode, showing everything the system is charging. Very useful if we suspect something’s wrong with us.
  • “Command” + “S” will start the command line, without loading the graphical environment.

If we go back to the system keyboard shortcuts, a classic is the “Command+Shift+3” that will take a picture of our screen at that moment, but few know that if we change the three, by the four, we can select only the part we want. Here we could stop, as always, there are not all the ones that are, but if they are all the ones that are… Surely you can think of some that are essential, share it with all .
