How to tell if an Apple cable is original or counterfeit

More than once we have seen how in some neighborhood stores are sold accessories for our iPhone or any device such as cables that a priori seem completely original and certified. These accessories are not always certified by the company itself and we must bear in mind that using accessories of this type can cause a failure in the terminal. In this article we show you how you can identify which accessories are counterfeit and also which accessories are not MFi certified by Apple.

It should be emphasized that if we use counterfeit or non-certified third-party Lightning accessories, the iOS equipment may be damaged, the quality may not be the best, it may have heating problems and it may even fail to synchronize or charge a device.

We can identify whether an accessory is certified by looking at the packaging of it. They must contain the MFi badges to be approved by Apple. In case you have a cable at home that you want to check if it is a real one or a copy, you should find on the cable itself about 17 cm from the USB connector a phase that says ‘Designed by Apple In California’ followed by d e ‘Assembled in China’ , ‘Assembled in Vietnam’ or ‘Indústria Brasileira’ and then a 12-digit number . If you include this data that cable is original but if it varies in any of the mentioned it is recommended not to use it or to buy it since it is not original.

We can also detect if a cable is counterfeit by observing its different components. In the following image we can see on the left an original Lighting head and on the right a counterfeit one. The differences are clearer since in the counterfeit we can see an irregular finish, a different length/width and in addition it is possible to observe a black plate when the original connector is silver or grey.

In addition to the Lightning connector, you can also detect anomalies in the USB connector at the other end. It can be seen on the counterfeit connectors that the bends are not at the same distance, that the surface of the USB is rough , that the contacts are silvered and not gold-plated. In the following picture as in the previous case we find on the left an original model and on the right the counterfeit so that we can see the differences clearly.

If you detect any kind of anomaly in your cable that we have talked about in this article, we recommend you to discard that accessory because it could cause serious problems in your devices. We should always try to buy this kind of products in stores we trust or in the official store. Obviously, beyond the cables, you should always remember to buy items for our devices that are certified by Apple itself to avoid compatibility problems.
