The operating system of an Apple TV, tvOS, is perhaps not as complex as that of an iPhone or iPad, but it can have certain frameworks that may not be as well known. One of them is to restore the system, something that does not require great knowledge, but that not everyone knows how to do. That’s why in this post we show you how to restore an Apple TV from scratch.
Why restore an Apple TV?
Apple TV is increasingly taking center stage, no longer just for consuming media content from platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, or Apple TV+ itself, but is also beginning to take on video console features with its support for PlayStation and Xbox controllers in Apple Arcade. However, as with any electronic device, there may be a failure that forces us to restore the Apple TV system.
It is not normal to find big software failures in an Apple TV, but stranger things have been seen. Therefore, restoring the system sometimes becomes the best solution to these problems. By making the device look like new, it removes all kinds of applications and settings made previously, which could be the cause of those failures.
Another reason you want to restore your Apple TV is because you’re selling the device or giving it away to a family member or friend. In that case, it’s highly recommended that you restore it so that the other person can set it up as they see fit and doesn’t have access to your Apple account, which is necessary to make the system work.
How to restore your Apple TV and make it like new
The steps to restore an Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD are as follows:
- Go to Apple TV Settings.
- Go to System and click on “Reset”.
- You’ll now have three options, the “Reset” option, which will clear all settings and data from your Apple TV without requiring an Internet connection. The second option is “Reset and Update”, which requires an internet connection and will not only delete your settings and data but will also install the latest version of tvOS available, if your computer is not already updated. The last option serves to cancel the process and go back.
If you have a Apple TV 3rd generation or earlier , the steps to follow are these:
- On Apple TV, go to General Settings.
- Click now on “Reset”.
- The “Reset Settings” options now appear, which clears the settings and data without the need to connect to the Internet. The other option is “Restore”, which requires an internet connection and in addition to deleting the data and settings, will update the device to the most current version of software available.
Once these steps have been taken, on any Apple TV model, you will be asked to confirm that you want to restore your Apple TV and the restoration process will begin. This may take a few minutes, depending on the data you have stored on your computer, but it should not take too many minutes.
Once this restoration process is complete, you’ll find an Apple TV that is completely new in terms of software. You will be able to sell or give it away without worrying about someone else having access to your data, as you will have to re-enter your credentials to activate the device with an Apple ID. And, of course, you will be able to reconfigure it with the same account you had before if you wish.
