How to rotate a video on iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

I’m sure you’ve had to use a video on occasion and have found that the orientation is not correct. It’s quite common when we shoot videos in a hurry, but fortunately there’s an easy solution.

For some reason, up to iOS 13 the Photos app does not allow you to change the orientation of videos natively, but it is possible to do so thanks to extensions to third-party apps or even Apple’s own applications such as iMovie. In addition, beginning with iOS 13, Apple has also added this feature to the Photos app’s own video-editing functionality.

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch with iOS 13 or higher, you’re in luck. In this case the operating system’s own native video editor will allow you to do so, so it won’t take long to do so.

To rotate a video in this version of the operating system you must do the following:

  1. Open the Photos app and find the video you need to rotate.
  2. Once located, open the video and tap on the Edit button in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Activates the crop tool which is represented by an icon with a kind of square surrounded by two arrows.
  4. Touch the rotate video icon in the upper left corner of the screen (it’s the one shaped like a square with an arrow in one corner).
  5. Finally, confirm the rotation of the video by tapping on the OK button in the lower right corner of the screen.

Once done, you’ll see that you exit the editor and return to the video playback screen. There you can see the result and whenever you need to you can repeat the previous steps to reverse the changes.

With iOS 12 or earlier

Before you get into the flour and explain the exact process for rotating any video on an iOS device you should meet a couple of requirements.

The first is that you install the iMovie app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. To do this, simply go to the App Store, find the app and tap on the Get button to start the download and installation.

This is a free app offered by Apple, so all you have to do is enter your Apple ID password or identify yourself with Face ID or Touch ID to confirm your “purchase.

When iMovie is installed on the device you must activate the iOS extension . To do this you must do this:

  1. Open the Photos app and access any video from your reel.
  2. Tap on the Edit button in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Now tap on the icon of the three points within a circle at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Play over More.
  5. Activate the switch next to the iMovie app name.

Now that the app is installed and the extension activated, you are ready to rotate any video easily from Photos on iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Use the iMovie extension to rotate videos from the Photos app

If you’ve followed the steps above, you’re all set to “flip” any video from your iOS device.

To do this you must do the following:

  1. Open the video you want to rotate from the Photos app and tap the Edit button in the upper-right corner of the screen.
  2. Tap on the icon of the three points inside a circle.
  3. Tap on the iMovie icon to open the extension.
  4. Touch the video with two fingers and rotate them in the direction you want to rotate the video.
  5. Finally touch the OK button in the upper right corner of the screen.

When you take the last step the iMovie extension will start working and after a few seconds you will return to the video playback screen, but this time will already be turned in the direction you have indicated.

Many users are still unfamiliar with iOS app extensions and it’s really a shame, as they often allow us to do things much easier, faster and can help us be more productive with our equipment.
