At Apple we have tested quite a few devices that are compatible with HomeKit, Apple’s home automation solution for devices. One of the most prolific is Koogeek, whose Smart Light Bulb we analyzed this time after several days of use.

Easy to install and quick to use
Like all HomeKit accessories , this smart bulb is very easy to install. You place the bulb in the socket, turn on the switch and open the Home app or the one provided by Koogeek. Add the accessory and you are ready to use.
The special feature of this bulb is that you do not need any additional accessories to control it. You don’t have to buy a separate bridge or hub or purchase a pack of several bulbs that includes it. Perhaps the reason for this is that the weight of the bulb is considerable. As soon as you open it and hold it in your hand, you will know that it is not a normal light bulb. It is quite heavy compared to a typical LED bulb.
In the image you can see the illumination of this bulb with HomeKit, where we can also regulate its “heat”.
Once we have it added to our home with the iOS House app, we can already start “playing” with it. As we know, we can now activate this bulb both from the app and from the new Control Center. And of course, with Siri. As we have seen in other occasions, it is great to be able to tell Siri to turn on the light in the living room.
One of the things I like best is that you can still use this light bulb like any other. That is, when you turn the switch on and off it turns on and off . This way you don’t have to activate it from the Apple Watch or the iOS device. The problem is that if we use it this way, the default light is too white. That and you have to remember to leave it on to use it with HomeKit.
Good price, designed for secondary lights
The price of this Koogeek smart light bulb is quite tight. Compared to other similar solutions and with support for different colors, it is the lowest I have found. Other manufacturers require the mentioned bridge included in a pack that might throw back those who want to get into home automation without headaches.
The addition of a bridge inevitably complicates the installation with HomeKit. That’s why this smart bulb is so attractive.

The only snag I’ve found is that it’s intended for secondary locations. At the beginning of my tests I placed it as the main light bulb of the room and illuminated less than a conventional LED . Therefore I have ended up placing it in a floor lamp whose switch is less accessible and therefore fits better.
This is one of the cheapest ways to have a smart light bulb of different colors in your home
You have to bear in mind that it is a light bulb that attracts attention. While its high weight doesn’t matter much, you will have to place it hidden by a screen or a ceiling . That said, it’s a great product to start with Apple’s home automation platform and test the waters calmly.
