Home and AwayVía
It would be great if we could have several configurations on our laptop, or have it automatically run different applications depending on where we are. For example, to have a program P2P and iChat automatically run at home, change the wallpaper, etc. When we are at work it would be interesting to automatically mount local drives, run the usual office applications, etc.
This is made possible by an application called Home and Away. In a way it resembles the Do Something When application we discussed at Apple. Home and Away uses the IP address of the Mac and the network it connects to to determine where we are and, from there, executes the actions and applications we have indicated.
The Apple Blog offers advice on how to set it up. If our Mac obtains the IP address dynamically, we can write a 0 in last position, which will act as a “wildcard” and detect all possibilities. So, if we write 192.168.1.0, all the addresses between 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.255 that can be assigned to us will be valid. Home and Away is free.
