The friends of 9to5mac have discovered something interesting by looking at their iPad with the newly made Jailbreak and the iFunBox app. They have discovered a new set of files in the iPad Music application. These files are named “radio button” and have an icon that looks like the radio icon that used to be used in iTunes for Mac. The current iPad music application, as you know, has no radio functionality, so the first thing we can think of after seeing this discovery is that Apple could add streaming radio for the iPad to iTunes. The iPhones with Jailbreak do not contain these files in the Music application.
Discovered “Buy Radio” buttons on an iPad with Jailbreak
Even more interesting is that the name of these button files have the label “buy” in the file name, which could imply an exciting new functionality. We’ve heard several rumours about the possibility of Apple launching its own streaming music service in the style of Spotify or Pandora. Bloomberg even dared to predict that this service would be launched in Q1 2013. According to the publication, executives from Universal Music Group, Warner Music Groups Corp and Sony’s music division met with Apple at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino to discuss plans for a radio launch.
According to Bloomberg: “With music sales slowly declining, Apple and record companies are looking for new ways for consumers to discover and buy digital music” .
If we think about it, the iPod Nano has always had the ability to play FM radio and to make iTunes purchases of songs tagged on the iPod.
So if we take the uncovered buttons literally, Apple might be thinking of offering to sell music stations based on particular songs, artists or genres. If Bloomberg’s report is right, it won’t take long to find out.
