Fortnite Battle Royale for iOS is the multi-platform dream come true. App of the Week

At last. After a couple of days of waiting, this weekend I got the invitation to play Fortnite: Battle Royale . I had the game downloaded on the 10.5-inch iPad Pro since March 15 and I was already able to satisfy my curiosity. That’s why Fortnite is our App of the Week.

Fortnite and the dream of multiplatform games

It has been a long time since I had so much fun with an online multiplayer. While my experience with this type of game goes back to the Battlefield: 1942 original , in recent years I have preferred the shoot-em-up campaign games. Although I have been waiting for a long time for the opportunity to play one again from the beginning, so as not to fall into a battlefield surrounded by veteran players.

The bus from which we jumped with the rest of the opponents over the island.

That opportunity came from Fortnite: Battle Royale this weekend. The game is still expanding its capabilities to accommodate all players, but at the moment it is only accessible by invitation. Mine arrived this Saturday and since then I have played a lot more than I expected.

The requirements to play are quite easy to meet : iPhone 6S, iPhone SE, iPad Mini 4, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad 2017 and later models. Of course, you need an internet connection in addition to iOS 11 to make it work. This means that you can play if you have an iOS device between 2014 and 2015.

In Fortnite you share your account data and advances between PCs, consoles and platforms except when it is between PS4 and Xbox One

This mode of Fortnite shares the battlefield with video game and PC players (thanks to Vulkan, a technology we analyzed in depth last week). With exactly the same elements, weapons and possibilities. The only difference, at the moment, is in the controls. Playing on an iPhone or iPad requires us to move our fingers to the sides to be able to move the character, jump, aim, duck and, of course, shoot.

When you descend in free fall, you can open and close the glider whenever you want.

Anyone who is used to a mouse, keyboard or controller will find it difficult to adapt to touch controls. Luckily, in my case the baptism was directly to a multi-touch screen , so I didn’t feel locked in by the interface. As commented by our colleagues at Vidaextra, Fortnite: Battle Royale has a series of changes compared to the desktop or console version.

The developer of the game, Epic Games, has taken into account that Fortnite players in iOS can find themselves in different situations than those who play from a PC or a console. The data connectivity allows us to play anywhere: on the street, in the subway or in the car. With helmets or without sound.

For this reason, they have decided to include a visual indicator that orients us of the origin of different sounds. A kind of record that shows us steps, shots and treasure chests when we are close. It is not an exact location, but it helps in case you play without sound.

Hilarious and frantic: that’s Fortnite for iOS

If you have never played a battle royale , Fortnite may be the most fun candidate to start with. Especially now that there aren’t too many advanced users. When you create your account and launch the game (if you have an invitation), the game preparation screen will appear. At the moment there are two modes:** solo and with a team** of up to four players.

When you start playing you will enter a kind of limbo where you will be with the rest of the players, waiting for a maximum of 100 to join. You will then fly on a bus from which you will have to choose when to jump on to a gigantic island.

You can go in free fall as long as you want (up to a minimum height), open the hang glider to direct your flight and close it again to fall at a higher speed. Once you touch the ground, you will have to run , look for weapons and resources while you try not to get your head blown off by one of the other 99 players.

If you wanted to play a battle royale from the beginning, Fortnite is your best chance

The goal of Fornite for iOS is that of every type of game battle royale : to be the last one alive. Like The Immortals. For this, you will be able to kill your enemies with a fairly wide variety of weapons. From the melee spike with which you start every game, to explosives, to machine guns, silenced pistols and sniper rifles.

Another highlight is that you can collect resources (wood, brick, stone) to build different buildings. Stairs, walls, jump platforms and traps to defend yourself, ambush your enemies or kill them with stealth.

Sometimes, when you are shot you get hurt. You can recover but an extra dose of lead will definitely kill you.

The map is gigantic, something that could be a problem when there are few opponents left if Epic Games has not found the right solution. From time to time, a storm that threatens the island in all games closes the playable terrain . Otherwise, we would be wandering indefinitely on an island of absurd size.

Fortnite is a free game with purchases in-app of virtual currency that serves to get uniforms and various accessories. Its download weighs 2GB, considerably less than the 10GB of the console version. You can sign up for an invitation on the Epic Games website.

Without a doubt, this is an achievement of the industry and, at the same time, a tremendously fun game .
