At least 100,000 photographs of Snapchat have been stolen, including nudes of minors
We are talking about a very serious issue that has been on everyone’s lips since the CelebGate scandal, but it seems that something similar has happened again. Hackers have stolen over 100,000 photos and videos from the Snapchat application, including photos of children. The worst thing is that they threatened to publish them and finally did so.
Snapchat is not the first time it is involved in controversy. In 2013 a security flaw was found that made it easy to access the phone number of any user. And so it was, the company was forced to apologize after 4.6 million phone numbers of the application’s users were leaked.
Nowadays we have to be very sure of the use we give to any application, to avoid things like this to happen. But it’s not always the fault of the application, sometimes a third party is involved in the theft of personal photos and videos, as has happened with Snapchat.
Snapchat was not a very safe application and so the facts proved. But this time the image leakage does not come from you, but from third party applications used by users.
A large database of photos from Snapchat users, including videos, has been released. Hackers have been collecting this information for years and to some 4chan users have referred to this leak as “The Snappening”, claiming that what happened is even more serious than the Celebgate.
It has been several days since the threat of the leakage of the images and videos, and it has been so, since approximately 13Gb of personal images have been leaked, which are now available to anyone. The users of 4chan have set to work and are generating a database with user names of the stolen photos, so that those affected can search for their images and take legal action.
Third-party applications are the cause of the problem
It seems that the cause of the problem has been third-party applications, which Snapchat users used to send the above-mentioned images and videos . One of them is Sanpsave, which was in charge of uploading to the cloud the images and videos that users shared.
A Snapsave developer has denied that his application was at fault :
“Our application had nothing to do with the problem. We never registered a username and password”
The cause of the problem could be a web client called Snapsaved. However, users who used the SnapSaved service, not to be confused with Snapsave as they are different, did not realize that by acting as a web client, it stores and saves online all the photos and videos that have been exchanged with Snapchat, with the username that had been registered on the client. And this is where the hackers were able to access to commit the theft.
If we refer to recent events in February of this year, Snapchat was also hacked and thousands of users received photos of fruit shakes from the hackers themselves. As we have learned from Business Insider.
What do you think about all this controversy? Today we have to keep in mind what applications we use to communicate and what we share with others. Tell us what you think about all this.
