Doorbells disappear from the list of HomeKit accessories

Or rather it was, because in the last few hours has disappeared from the list in which we have categories such as lights, sockets, thermostats, doors, speakers or cameras. A temporary or permanent elimination?

The truth is that we haven’t had any doorbells with HomeKit available so far either . We saw a demo at the HomeKit presentation, but so far no manufacturer had released its own doorbell integrated with HomeKit. August Doorbell Cam appeared as available “soon” as 9to5mac has noticed, but now it has disappeared completely from the Apple website.

In recent months the various types of HomeKit accessories have proliferated. Apple has in fact tried to speed up the process of obtaining a HomeKit certificate from the manufacturers. However, one type of accessory that has not managed to arrive is the doorbell . Probably due to the difficulty of making them at the moment, Apple has decided to eliminate the category.

As we saw during the HomeKit presentation keynote, doorbells integrated with Apple’s intelligent home automation system work as follows. When someone rings the door, a notification appears on the iPhone or iPad with a live video that is broadcast from the doorbell camera. From that same notification we can open the door or deny access. That is, it is the combination of a HomeKit lock and a HomeKit camera.

One possible reason for this is the privacy of the users. Ringtones connected to mobile phones already exist, and in fact Amazon recently acquired Ring, one of the leading companies in this sector. But these rings can also cause serious privacy problems, as has already happened. Perhaps Apple is looking for a way to avoid such situations. We will see if this category will soon reappear in the list of HomeKit accessories. Although at the moment, there is no official response from Apple, nor from the manufacturers who have tried to make these bells.
