If you work with files in the cloud or on private servers, you probably have an FTP client installed on your Mac. FTP clients allow us to easily connect and copy files between a local computer and a server on the network. For macOS, probably the best one is Transmit, now in version 5, and it has changed completely .

According to Panic, the developer, has rethought and redesigned everything , from the heart of Transmit to the most priceless element of all. The main novelties we find are the following:

  • New interface: Much simpler and adapted to the current macOS style. You can easily find any action you are looking for thanks to the fact that it maintains the intuitive structure that characterized Transmit and adapts a fresh and simple style.
  • Service support: Transmit now supports not only FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and S3 connections, but also personal clouds from Backblaze B2, Box, Google Drive, DreamObjects, Dropbox, Microsoft Azure and Rackspace.
  • Synchronization between apps: Thanks to Panic Sync you can easily synchronize your pages via Transmit on different devices.
  • Speed improvements: With this update, Panic has taken advantage of this to improve the performance of the apps by connecting to servers and transmitting files.
  • Other improvements: Tags, two-factor authentication, terminal access, inspector, new columns… Many changes have been introduced and you can discover them by experimenting with the app yourself.

One of the most controversial changes in the update is probably the fact that the app is no longer distributed through the Mac App Store , just by buying a license from the official website. There is a reason for this, according to Panic, one of the biggest requirements from users is to be able to test the app in a demo version before buying it.

As long as Apple does not allow trial versions in the Mac App store, Transmit 5 will not arrive at the Apple store.

Since there are no demos in the Mac App Store , the app is distributed only on the web. And obviously, there is a demo version for you to try the app before you buy it. Panic hopes to return to the Mac App Store, and they’ll reconsider when Apple changes its policies to allow licensing as trial versions.

The price of Transmit 5 is $35 for a limited time, then will increase to $45 . As indicated, you can try the app a few days before you buy it. There is no discount for people who had bought the Transmit 4 license, but those who bought Transmit 4 after June 1st will be able to upgrade to Transmit 5 for free.
