The accessories are changing as much as technology, and today it is undoubted that the evolution is to mobility. We work more and more with our iPads or our iPhones, almost as much or more than with our Macs. And there are accessories that have adapted to this trend , one of the most popular being external hard drives.
Traditionally used to expand the capacity of our computers, or even to transport large amounts of data from home to the office, these devices have always been one of the first choices of users if they think of an accessory for their equipment. The arrival of devices like the iPhone or iPad has changed how we work with technology: more oriented towards comfort when travelling, or working beyond the office.
The arrival of “Files” with iOS 11 makes file management with external hard disks easier and more interesting
Apple made real one of the requests that users had been asking for years: a common file system for all the apps, that would allow to work comfortably from the operating system and not from each one of the applications. With the arrival of iOS 11, “Files” combines not only local or cloud files with iCloud , but also those of other services such as Dropbox or OneDrive, allowing users to use external devices to better manage their files in motion. Today, we will be talking about , a very interesting proposal from LaCie , a leading expert in this type of device.
DJI Copilot, absolute all-in-one and off-road
The device created by LaCie is surprisingly versatile . As soon as we take it out of the box: it’s an external unit – it’s certainly not exactly thin ( 11.1 cm wide by 13.6 cm long ), with a weight of 0. 5 kg approximately… but don’t be fooled by its dimensions: it’s a 2TB external hard drive case, similar in appearance to LaCie’s Rugged ( very well known ) with a drop, dust and splash resistant design.
The hard disk itself is encased in a rugged silicone case that protects it around its perimeter , even the rear ports are not only covered with a protective cap so that they don’t get dirty on the move, the package also includes a series of cables with a design that allows you to use the case on top of them when they are connected, these are the cables:
- Lightning Cable (for devices with iOS)
- Micro USB cable for Android
- USB-C cable for Android
This external hard drive is designed to be completely independent: it has 2TB of storage, battery, display and all kinds of connections
A USB-C cable ( USB 3.1 ) and a USB-C to USB-A cable, which we can use to connect the device to our Mac, are also included for when we are at home. This is because the product is designed to be a replacement for the outdoor laptop in terms of storing , uploading files or downloading them. Especial MacBook Pro 2018
Not only is it that easy to connect a device, but also features an SD card slot , which the manufacturer recommends using when you don’t have the cables handy – for example if you’re flying your drone and want to download videos. By inserting the card you can import all its contents at a speed of about 45-50MBs for a Category 10 SD-HC card . And here comes another surprise: how will we know if the transfer has finished, or the speed of it without connecting to any iPhoneiPad or laptop? Very easy, this unit incorporates a small screen where it informs us of the entire process.
It is a monochrome screen with backlighting ( in case we work outside at night ) where we will know the free memory, the transfer speed, the files on the media we have connected, the time remaining in the process, or even the battery. And yes, another surprise that is also double: not only does it have a built-in battery to be able to work offline, we can also use it as a power bank to charge our iOS devices . It can be charged directly from the mains with the included cable, or with the USB-C cable connected to a charger or to the Mac itself while transferring files, for example.
The perfect adventure partner
I must say that the LaCie product surprises a lot by its versatility , because it has almost everything: screen, battery, various connection interfaces, anti-splash cables including Lightning, USB-C, USB-A, waterproof, dustproof, shockproof , an internal storage space of 2TB but also has a memory card slot so its versatility is incredible.
For asking more, that the internal hard disk would have been SSD – although that would have made the price much higher, far from the 369.99 we can find it with. The hard disk is bulky but not too heavy to carry in the backpack and the case, which we can also be confident is safe and ready for occasional bumps without the need to buy an additional case.
A good discovery, which you can complement for your new MacBook Pro – for example – and largely aimed at professionals who have to deal with exteriors but need the security and confidence of a good backup device with resistance to shocks and frights . Of course, the name “Copilot” is more than adequate on this device.
