How should we count Mac sales versus PC sales?

Yeah, we’re back in front of one of those studios. An IDC report indicates that the PC market is following the same trend: fewer and fewer computers are being sold, but the drop in sales of Windows PCs is more pronounced than that of Macs . Apple ranks fourth in the list of the world’s largest vendors, below HP, Lenovo and Dell.

In fact, despite the general downward trend, HP, Dell and Apple have all gone up in computers sold (Apple has recently renewed its range, so it’s understandable). But as is always the case with these reports, we should look at how the study has been done. There are extra details to be taken into account .

First and foremost, companies like Gartner count convertibles like the Surface in these studies, but they don’t count “pure” tablets like the iPad. We could get into the debate of whether iOS 11 will make the iPad worth being there, but it’s still something to consider. The definition of the PC is already different depending on which company you look at . If we look at Apple’s iPad sales figures (they have been summarized in Lifewire) we would have to add almost 22 million more devices in sales.

Another interesting point is that Apple is one of the few companies to confirm concrete sales figures. Dell stopped doing this as soon as it was no longer listed on the stock exchange, so we have to rely on estimated sales numbers .

I will not say that the trend is false or that the survey manipulates because nothing is further from the truth: computer sales are falling and no one has been able to reverse it. But we must bear in mind that right now the definition of computer covers much more than before.
