We must admit that in previous versions Gmail doesn’t get along very well with the Mail app, but in OS X Yosemite things have improved quite a bit and they make a very good couple. To add a Gmail account in OS X Yosemite’s mail manager, first open the Mail application. If you’re opening Mail for the first time, you may see a pop-up window asking you to add an email account (if you haven’t already done so). In this window, select ‘Google’ and then enter your Gmail information.

If you already use OS X Yosemite’s Mail application but want to add a new account, just go to the Mail menu located in the top left corner of the screen, click on the “Preferences” option and once there you will have to go to “Accounts” and click on the “+” sign at the bottom left. From there, the steps to follow to configure the Gmail account are the same as before: select the option “Google” and follow the steps.

Once you have selected the option “Google” click on “Continue”. Mail will now prompt you to sign in to your Gmail account by entering your email address and password .

In case you use two-step authentication you will have to enter the corresponding code , and then a window will appear in which Google tells you what “OS X Yosemite” wants you to allow it to do: view and manage your mail, view the mail address, basic profile information, manage the calendars, etc.
