Citrix presents its new virtual machine for Mac
In the last week Citrix has launched a free application on the App Store called Citrix Receiver, a client that allows us to run applications Windows on the iPhone via a Citrix network offering a more efficient transmission method than VNC. Macrumors
But what’s really interesting is the demos they’re doing on a new virtualization solution, called XenClient for Mac, which promises to increase performance. The main improvement is that it is a type one virtualization , which basically means that it runs directly on the hardware of the computer.
The most common virtual machines we have available right now for Mac OS X are type two, which means they run within the system itself . When you virtualize Windows with VM Ware, it actually has two ” layers ” above the hardware, with Mac OS X actually communicating with the hardware.
A type one virtualization implies that when running on the hardware directly, the system is more fluid and less compromised for the security of the information on your Mac .
If you notice in the video, even if you show it on a PC, the virtual machine fully uses the 3D acceleration of the graphics card. In type two virtual machines you need a reboot to be able to use the acceleration, as it is usually not possible to use it. This implies that Citrix could have a close collaboration with Intel to be able to develop such a program.
