Storm by Weather Underground, the weather app to make a fool of the weatherman

The weather forecast we’re used to with temperature, humidity and wind is for grannies… Storm is another matter.

Temperature history, graphs with wind chill, dew point or UV index, high resolution radar (250 meters) for reflectivity and speed with real time reports, storm tracking with information on strength, direction, speed and components (wind, hail, lightning, tornadoes…) among others, overlays on the map with data on road conditions, wind speed, temperature, water temperature, snow, storm tracks, weather stations, fronts, tropical storms, jet streams… .

Hell, we even have data like the exact times of sunrise and moonset, or overlays of earthquakes . My meteorological knowledge really falls short of understanding half of what I see in the app, but I sense that people who are really into the subject will find a strong candidate to become their source of reference information, especially if they live in the United States.

Data from the application are considerably more abundant on the other side of the Atlantic, where, in addition to information from the National Weather Service of the United States, a network of more than 100,000 private weather stations is also taken into account. And it is not that we in Europe are exactly lagging behind in this respect (quite the opposite, thanks to a more generous budget), but simply that Weather Underground does not seem to have put its efforts into it.

Taking away this criticism, and the perhaps reasonable slowness of the interface (talking to an iPhone 5 as a reference) as soon as you activate a few layers, Storm is still an app that already in its first version leaves the bar very high. And I’m not even talking anymore about the vast information it displays, but about additional features (at least in the United States) such as the possibility of receiving notifications with tornado and storm or flood warnings among others of which we can define the radius of distance.

Storm is available for iPhone and iPad free of charge with ads. You can purchase an annual subscription for 1.99 euros to get rid of them.
