ATi has announced that starting later this month, configurations of Radeon HD 3870 graphics on the Mac Pro will be available from $210, something that has been missing for a long time because currently the only ATi option on Apple’s workstation are the various possible configurations Crossfire of Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics, a graphics that is in terms of performance well below the 3870.
As for the Mac Pro, it is currently possible to choose between the ATi 2600 XT or a pair of possible NVidia, the Quadro FX 5200 or the more domestic 8800 GT. It is very curious to see that in terms of graphics, Apple is always one step behind the latest releases : in the last iMac they mounted an 8800 GS when since a few months ago several models of 9 Series are on the market, including the very powerful 9800 GTX.
As for ATi, it’s a little bit the same: now, Apple and ATi decide to introduce the HD Radeon 3870 in the Mac Pro, when it seems that the new 4000 Series are very close, and there is even talk about some of them and their core, the GPU RV770 .
You can see some benchmarks on this website, where compares the Radeon HD 3870 against the 8800 GT , with the NVidia graphics winning by a very small margin.
