This version connects to the same servers that the game has always used, so we won’t have that “separation” of OS X players and Windows players that some people feared.
The best part of the news, at least for me, is that the development of this version for OS X has been done with the idea of being able to release simultaneous updates for all platforms as soon as the stable version arrives. No more prioritizing what’s new for Windows as it happens in quite a few games: all versions will receive updates at the same time. To play this beta, you must sign in with a Guild Wars 2 account and download the client.
The Guild Wars 2 beta can be installed on mid 2010 and later iMacs, mid 2011 Mac mini, mid 2010 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro, and early 2011 13-inch MacBook pro or later. So it doesn’t seem possible to install it on MacBook Air, and even if they don’t specify it, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it work on the Mac Pro. Its system requirements are as follows, and may change with the release of the final version:
- OS X Lion or Mountain Lion
- Intel Core i5 processor or higher with at least 4 GB of RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce 320M, ATI Radeon HD 6630M, Intel HD 3000 or higher graphics card
- 25 GB of free space
- Mouse, keyboard or equivalent and broadband internet connection
