Apple announces the list of MacBooks that will be “vintage and obsolete”

In accordance with its policies, Apple periodically reviews the validity of its devices, and this time it has done so with the computer division. As reported by the Bite Apple company, as of late April 2020, the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro that were launched in 2013 and 2014 will be included in the list of “old and obsolete products”.

As it is known the qualification of old or vintage and obsolete indicates that the models will be difficult to repair in the company’s stores. However, those models classified only as vintage, the case of these Macbooks, are still compatible with the latest operating system updates , currently, MacOS Catalina.

In accordance with its policies, Apple offers repairs of its iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Mac products at Apple Stores or Apple Authorized Service Providers for five years after the product is no longer in production. This will no longer be the case for the following MacBooks models that in April exceed the period set by Apple:

  • MacBook Air (11-inch, mid-2013)
  • MacBook Air (13-inch, mid-2013)
  • MacBook Air (11-inch, early 2014)
  • MacBook Air (13-inch, early 2014)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, mid-2014)

MacOS and iOS computers and peripherals are considered classic or vintage five years after their last manufacture. With this designation, Apple and Authorized Service Providers may receive service, but that is “subject to inventory availability” , according to Apple.

And it is not until two years later that the products are labelled as obsolete , that the end of the line for authorised repairs is reached. And that’s when they conform to Apple’s policy that all hardware services for obsolete products without exception are discontinued. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products.
