We talk a lot about the screens on Apple devices, but on top of that there’s a component that’s also very important. I’m talking about their glass cover, which is after all what we touch hundreds of times every day on our iPhone and iPad. And recently Apple has made a 250 million dollar investment to the person who provides those crystals: Corning Incorporated .
This manufacturer may sound more familiar to you because of the name of the crystal it produces: Gorilla Glass . This is a very durable glass, designed to resist strong impacts, which is also present in several other brands’ mobile devices. Apple has been using it since the launch of the original iPhone in 2007.
AppleApple will invest in India with several suppliers to increase production in the country
The investment is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Fund, a company program that invests money in its suppliers to achieve advances in the manufacture of their device components from the United States . Corning’s factory is in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, where more than 1,000 people work thanks in part to these investments.
In 2017, Apple has already invested another $200 million in Corning, and since the first iPhone, the investment in Corning crystals has already reached $3 billion . In total, Apple has already invested more than $60 billion in the US suppliers of its final products.
