Julz Arney, Senior Manager in Fitness Technologies at Apple, has given an interview in which he has explained in more detail how the Dance training works . This new training mode is one of the many new features of watchOS 7, which is available as a developer beta and public beta.
As Arney tells us in his interview to HT Tech, all the trainings available in the Apple Watch use ” finely tuned algorithms to understand the training we do and give us the most accurate metrics of each one “. With this in mind the development of Dance Training has followed the same strategy.
A strategy in which Apple has had to solve several challenges, mainly because the movements during a dance are neither predictable nor repetitive , unlike a running or rowing session.
No doubt a commendable task which, as already mentioned in the WWDC’s inaugural Keynote, has led Apple to have to adjust the algorithms for many types of dance. Now, the Apple Watch is able to detect, through accelerometers, when we are moving only our hands and upper body; it is also able to detect when we keep our hands and trunk still but move our feet. With this information, combined with the heart rate data, the watch can give us an actual record of the calories expended in the activity .
