One of the great novelties of iOS 9 will be News, a new native news application through which users will be able to access information and content of their interest in a very easy way. Now, it has been known that the content of News will be selected by humans and not algorithms , no doubt a great news, but it has already started to raise some questions about it.
Apple is already looking for editors in Santa Clara (California) , who will be in charge of choosing the news that will be shown in the News application. This has been possible thanks to the last job offers published by the company.
News is a similar app to Flipboard, Google News, BlinkFeed and other similar news services , but it will have a big difference. Unlike these services, News news will be selected by a team, not by algorithms.
News content will be managed by a team of editors
In the job description, Apple comments that the Apple News team is looking for passionate and knowledgeable editors who can help showcase the best news of the day locally, nationally and internationally. These editors will be in charge of choosing the latest news, so that the News app will always have all the latest news.
On the other hand, editors will also have to select the best news and catalogue it according to their professional area of expertise . In addition, Apple points out that the editors of the News app will have to be in contact and relate to the different publications that will display their articles through this service, as well as have the ability to write e-mail newsletters.
However, the fact that the contents are selected by a team of human editors and not by algorithms could generate a conflict of interest between business and information . Gabe Rivera, chief editor of Techmeme, pointed out that “Apple, as the most valuable company in the world, cannot and should not be entrusted with the task of presenting coverage of so many important topics” .
Obviously no one can be totally impartial, so these Apple News content editors must be trusted to select the best content in the most objective way possible . There are many people who don’t care about this, but it is something to be aware of.
Apple News will arrive with iOS 9 in three countries around the world this fall
The News application will be available together with iOS 9 from next fall when Apple releases the final version of the operating system. However, the service will be exclusive for users in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia , so in the rest of the countries we will not enjoy News, at least for the time being.
On the other hand, from 9to5Mac they comment that Apple will also offer a tool called News Publisher , through which it will give the different publishers the necessary bases to add their own content to the News app.
