Combining a USB port with the card reader is at first sight so simple that it seems strange that there are no computers with this feature yet. Apple has patented this, a system that combines a standard USB connection with an SD card reader . All in one “port”.
The patent filed in 2011 is, as we said, quite simple. In the diagrams you can see how both connections occupy the same place. For the user it is an advantage, for the Apple design team a greater versatility to get equipment that makes better use of space . This is important now that they are becoming smaller and smaller.
Now the question is how Apple, if at all, would take advantage of this new option. That is, of the two USB ports we have in a MacBook Air we would “lose” one when using the SD card reader or we would gain a USB port when replacing the current SD card reader with the new combo connector.
It is not a revolutionary idea as there is already something similar, the eSATAp connection port that combines a USB port with eSATA but interesting. Of course, at the moment it’s just another of the many patents Apple holds.
