Lala closes its service on May 31st to make way for a supposed new Apple service

TechCrunch

If you remember, you will remember that Apple acquired Lala, a music streaming service, in early December last year. This meant that Apple had plans for the future to move iTunes to the cloud, in a service more in line with the times.

Now there seems to be signs of that change. Lala.com has just posted a message on its website announcing that will cease to provide service as soon as May ends , so that as of June (the month in which WWDC 2010 curiously begins), Lala will cease to exist. The service no longer offers downloads and music purchases, although it allows existing users to continue using the service with the library they already have.

The users of the service will also receive vouchers redeemable in the iTunes Music Store for the value of the purchases they have made in Lala, so it is expected that once Lala closes its doors definitively, Apple will launch a similar service of its own, with the domain itunes.com if we follow the rumors that appeared in January about this service. It wouldn’t be strange, since right now that address leads to the iTunes website.

The services for listening to music in the cloud are already very numerous, Spotify seems to take the reins of the market and Grooveshark offers us to have all their music available without any kind of advertisement for 30 euros a year. Will Apple improve this offer? Hopefully, as Jobs said with the example of multitasking on iPhone OS 4.0, they won’t be the first to offer this but they will be the best.
