Apple fires 200 employees of ‘Project Titan’, its autonomous car

Human beings have been dreaming of cars that drive themselves for decades, but it is not until now that we are seeing the first models that do so. Elon Musk’s Tesla are the most advanced autonomous vehicles that exist today, although they are not the only ones. There are several companies that are interested in developing driving systems of this type, and one of them is Apple.

For years there has been talk of ‘Project Titan’, a secret project of Cupertino’s that is believed to be linked to the team after the creation of his autonomous car. Not much is known about it, but there have been periods of time when it seemed to be abandoned and others more active. As reported by MacRumors on CNBC, Apple has laid off 200 employees related to him.

A spokesperson has confirmed the dismissals to CNBC, although he assures that the company still believes that there is a “great opportunity” with the autonomous systems . However, they have not been dismissed completely, as those employees have been reorganized to other projects.

Tesla engineers hired for ‘Project Titan’

Last August two new signings from the company for the ‘Project Titan’ were announced. They were Doug Field, former lead engineer at Tesla , who is leading the project together with Bob Mansfield.

‘Project Titan’ appeared for the first time in 2014 , and the first rumours claimed that Apple was creating a stand-alone car at a facility near its Cupertino headquarters. However, in 2016 it became clear that they might have moved away from this to focus on autonomous driving systems.
